The gift of a Sacred Heart education is frequently cited by alumni as the best gift their parents have given them. This week, Berkeley Rebman ’17 reflects on her Academy experience. This June, she will graduate from the University of Denver with a BSBA degree in Business Information & Analytics with minors in French & Francophone Studies and Leadership Studies. This summer, Berkeley will be moving to Boston for her job as a commercial strategy associate for Wayfair.
How does one describe a gift of nine years of compassion, empathy, and advocacy? It is impossible. In fact, it is not only a gift of nine years, rather a lifetime and something that can be drawn upon years after graduation.
The gift of a Sacred Heart education is the most valuable gift I have ever received, and I thank my parents every day for the sacrifices they made to give me that opportunity. From my nine years at the Academy, I fondly remember the many traditions including Congé and Silver Tea, but more importantly, I remember the lessons I learned and continue to carry with me today.
Using the Goals and Criteria as a foundation, my teachers not only taught us Shakespeare and algebra, but how to live a values-centered life of selflessness and service. Upon my graduation from the Academy, I was fortunate to continue my Sacred Heart education at Villa Duchesne and continue building upon those foundational values with integrity. Whether it be Student Council, tutoring underclassmen through National Honor Society, or serving as an ambassador to prospective families, the idea of lending a helping hand was ever present.
Fast forward to college, I am in my final year at the University of Denver serving as Undergraduate Student Government Vice President and just completed my term as Director of Programming for my sorority. I can confidently say that the idea of even pursuing these opportunities would not have even crossed my mind if it had not been for the Academy. Instilled with courage and confidence, I took the leap and stepped into these roles which have given me the opportunity to learn and grow daily. The opportunity to mentor students has been the most rewarding and has taught me how to be a better advocate for students and always ensure I approach all situations with compassion and empathy.
As my time in an educational setting draws to a close, I am eager to see how I can continue to utilize these values as a guiding light as I begin my career. I am undoubtedly thankful for the gift of a Sacred Heart education and am excited to step into the next chapter of my life with courage and confidence drawing upon the Goals and Criteria as I navigate these new waters.
