This week we celebrate National Volunteer Week and the spirit of service and camaraderie that is so distinctive at the Academy. Heather Locker, Special Events Coordinator, shares why she is inspired to give back to ASH.

When my husband, Jeff, and I met with Head of School Sister Maureen Glavin in 2010, she asked, “Will you make this school part of your life? And will you join this partnership with me for your children?” On that day, we said “yes” and today, almost 15 years later, we are still saying “yes.” This school is special because volunteers are able to take such a big part in their children’s lives and education. Volunteers at the Academy truly make a difference.

One of the first ways Jeff and I got involved was with Chemin de Fer. This weekend, we celebrate 50 Years of Chemin. It was started by a parent volunteer and has been fueled by parent, alumni, student, grandparent, past parent, faculty and staff volunteers ever since. We have met our closest friends over long days and late nights volunteering. We are united by a common goal — making the Academy stronger for our children. And by showing up, we show our children what it means to embody Goal 3 (a social awareness which impels to action) and Goal 4 (the building of community as a Christian value).

We hope that by setting this example, it implores our children to live a life of service and in doing so, we create a strong sense of community. My deepest gratitude to our volunteers — you make a difference!

Thank you, Volunteers!

This week is a perfect time to celebrate and give gratitude for the countless hours that members of the Academy community invest in volunteering. From coaches to room parents, committee members to event chairs, Board members to donors and student volunteers, we are very grateful for all you do for our school.
