Though the word Advent describes the four-week liturgical season prior to Christmas upon which we have just embarked, it also, in its simplicity, means “coming.” During Advent we remember the coming of Christ in history; we rejoice in the coming of Christ into the daily events of our lives (God, we are told, IS with us); and we anticipate the fullness of the coming of Christ in the future!

Celebrating the Feast of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne
Dear Academy Community,
We anticipate tomorrow’s Feast of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne celebration with great JOY! Among the many events:
- After a Eucharistic Procession from Duchesne High School to Mother Duchesne’s Shrine (where they will venerate their school’s namesake), the Duchesne High School community will join us for a special Feast Day Liturgy in Rauch Memorial Gym. Anyone who wishes is welcome to this special celebration.
- The Academy community is serving those in need with Feast Day gifts of food for New Hope Food Pantry.
- The Academy Alumni Association will be participating in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament from Friday morning until Saturday morning, book-ended by 8 a.m. masses in the Shrine. Anyone is welcome to join.
- The Alumni Association will engage in a day of service on Saturday.
Thank you to each one for celebrating Philippine by following her lead: Deepening our connection with the Heart of Christ AND BEING the Heart of Christ in the world through the lives that we lead and ways that we love!
I am thankful to be in this beautiful community as we continue to journey ever deeper into Christ’s Heart and God’s Grace.
Happy Feast everyone,
Maureen Glavin, rscj
St. Philippine’s Feast Day
Dear Parents,
We look forward to celebrating the Feast Day of our school’s foundress, St. Rose Philippine Duchesne, next week. If you have been here longer than a year, you know the basic outlines of HER STORY. Philippine was heroic in courage, inspirationally generous in service to others, and humble in claiming any sense of attachment to her accomplishments. These characteristics are true because of the one thing for which she is most known—her deep life of prayer.
The Spiritual Child
At last week’s Network Meeting for Sacred Heart School Heads, Board Chairs and Trustees from around the United States and Canada, Dr. Lisa Miller spoke about and provided statistics from her recent book, The Spiritual Child. Dr. Miller is Director of the Clinical Psychology Program at Columbia University Teachers College, and co-editor of the American Psychological Association journal Spirituality in Clinical Practice.
Teamwork Pays Off
I’d like to share a story that filled me with pride. I hope it fills you with pride that your child is a member of this Sacred Heart school!
Last week our Seventh Class students attended their annual two-day trip to Camp Lakewood. At Lakewood the students engage in activities that develop what are referred to as the soft skills: self-awareness, resiliency, persistence, listening and team building. It is an opportunity not only for personal growth but for class community building.
Holistic Education
- interior being (subjective knowledge)
- relational being (inter-subjective knowledge)
- world in which we live (objective knowledge)
Here at Sacred Heart, we believe that we are learning about God in each of those areas.
How to Raise Successful Kids
Dear Parents,
Dr. Julie Lythcott-Haims, author of How to Raise an Adult, was one of the keynote speakers at the meeting of leadership teams for the Network of Sacred Heart schools held here in June.
Here is a link to a shorter version of Julie’s message in a recently released TED Talk: How to Raise Successful Kids Without Over-Parenting
New Beginnings
I think I say this every year, but I love new school years! I like fresh notebooks, new uniforms, sharpened pencils and new textbooks. Most of all, I deeply appreciate new beginnings and hopeful possibilities pertaining to growth and development on every level.
Growth and Gratitude
Last week was particularly special as we launched our Eighth Class into the next stage of their educational journey. They are a group of wholesome, reflective, responsible, conscientious and good-hearted young men and women!
Today we celebrated our Pre-Primary students in their own special Closing Ceremony. And, tomorrow, we’ll say farewell to our Primary through Seventh Class students for the summer in their moment of acknowledgement and achievement. These end-of-the-year ceremonies, full of ritual and formality, are part of our heritage as a way of honoring our students’ growth and development.
Joy in the Midst of it All
These days are filled with many displays of LEADERSHIP as we experience much JOY in the midst of it all:
• Last Friday we were blessed with fabulous weather for the joy of Field Day.
• Monday we celebrated St. Madeleine Sophie Barat’s Feast Day with a beautiful, inspiring and educational Prayer Service led by the Social Justice and Student Council leadership teams.
Appreciation
Dear Parents,
I am humbled by—and so very appreciative of—all of you who are spending much time and energy for the success of Saturday’s Journey to Japan! Chemin de Fer is our largest fundraising event of the year, and our operating budget depends on its success. THANK YOU for supporting the Academy in this big endeavor!
Not to be overlooked, the community aspect of Chemin is one of its charms, year in and year out. Friendships are made and renewed while working together for your children’s Sacred Heart education. I look forward to seeing many of you on Saturday!
