Academy Alumni Receive Service Awards

Congratulations to Class of 2011 graduates Taylor Heuermann (Barat Academy) and Madeline Wappelhorst (Duchesne High School), who have been named recipients of the Archbishop John L. May Service Award in recognition of outstanding Christian service. One senior in each of the Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese of St. Louis receives this award for extraordinary volunteer achievement in their schools and communities. On April 15, a reception will be held at Busch Student Center on the campus of Saint Louis University.
The Wicked Witch of Oz

Stagestruck, our ASH acting troupe, will present The Wicked Witch of Oz on Saturday, March 28, at 5 p.m. and again on Sunday, March 29, at 2 p.m. in Cribbin Hall. All are invited to attend!
Blood Drive at ASH

The Social Justice Leadership Council is partnering again this year with the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center to sponsor a blood drive in the playroom on Monday, April 13 from 2:30–6:30 p.m.
Register here for a time that is convenient for you.
Our goal is to collect 40 units of blood. All are welcome! The Social Justice students will provide babysitting service for donors during the drive.
Shrine Docents’ Luncheon

Docents who—as volunteers—conduct tours of the Shrine and historic parts of the school were entertained last Saturday in what has become an annual gesture of gratitude hosted by Shrine Director Carol Pfitzinger on behalf of the school. Following the welcome in the parlor and luncheon served in the Conference Room, announcements were made and guests shared experiences they have had lately. Needs to staff several large tours coming this spring were outlined by Assistant Shrine Director Mary Glenn; and Jane Cannon announced the project that will begin soon whereby pictorial information about Philippine Duchesne will be mounted on some walls of the Shrine. While this will be of interest to all pilgrims, it is especially hoped that it will serve those who visit the Shrine when there is no docent so that they can engage in a self-guided experience that is meaningful and rewarding. This work, partly funded by Alumni donations, is expected to be finished in time for the Alumni Congé Reunion on June 13.
Following the luncheon, docents were invited to visit the Academy Archives, located beneath the Shrine, where Theresa Grass welcomed them and shared some of the many treasures that are kept there.

Memorial for Kate Keegan
March 25, 2015
We will be celebrating the life of Kate Keegan, longtime Academy faculty member, on Saturday, March 28, at 11 a.m. in the Shrine of St. Philippine Duchesne. A reception will follow in the Conference Room.
Kate was the mother of three Academy graduates: Jane Keegan Quarles ’91, Betsy Keegan Trapp ’94, and Dr. Molly Keegan ’96. She died March 23 following a long illness. The Keegan family has suggested that memorial donations be directed to the Anna Mae Marheineke Student Enrichment Fund.

Madeline Levine, Ph.D. is a psychologist with close to 30 years of experience as a clinician, consultant, educator and author. Her New York Times bestseller, The Price of Privilege, explores the reasons why teenagers from affluent families are experiencing epidemic rates of emotional problems.

Catholic Summer Camp and Activities Fair

Ultimate Pi Day

Saturday, March 14. is considered “the Ultimate Pi Day” for all of us living on planet earth in the year 2015. Unless you are 100 years old, you haven’t experienced this day in your lifetime, since it only rolls around once every 100 years! Here is why it’s the “ultimate” Pi Day…
Saturday’s date COULD be written 3.14.15 and, at exactly 9:26:53 a.m., we will experience the first 10 digits of the irrational number Pi: 3.14.15 9:26:53.
Mrs. Delicath’s Seventh Class math students anticipated Pi Day by watching a couple of videos that discuss the history of and significance of Pi, then listened to two musical compositions about Pi (one was a rap and one was a parody of “American Pie”). Patricia Thro, RSCJ

Sister Patricia Thro, so much a part of the Academy of the Sacred Heart, has passed into God’s Loving Embrace. She was a 1955 graduate of the Academy and entered the Society in 1957. Her many years of scholarly service in New Orleans and St. Louis included eight years as President of the Academy’s Board of Trustees. Before moving to the Society’s elder care center in California, she spent several years as an organist for the Shrine and helping in the Academy book store. She was the recipient of the 2010 Rose Philippine Duchesne Award. Read more about her life:
