In Support of our Sacred Heart Heritage
Maryville University Alumni Director Erin Verry traveled to St. Charles this morning to present a check for $25,000 to the Academy of the Sacred Heart, to underwrite Jane Shannon Cannon’s new book on the history of the Academy, Two Hundred Years: A Legacy of Love and Learning. Mrs. Cannon’s alma mater, Maryville University was founded by the Religious of the Sacred Heart in 1872 and continues to carry out the broad vision and mission of St. Philippine Duchesne.
Welcome Dr. Dempf, New Head of School
The Academy community welcomes Susan Tyree Dempf, Ph.D. as our new Head of School, effective July 1, 2017. Most recently Director of the High School at Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart in Miami, Dr. Dempf is a native of Upstate New York and was educated in the Sacred Heart tradition, having graduated from The Doane Stuart School in Albany. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, N.Y., and a Master’s in Administration from Springfield College in Massachusetts. She earned her Ph.D. in Teaching and Curriculum from Syracuse University.
Prior to her role at Carrollton, Dr. Dempf held positions including Associate Professor and Assistant Dean at the college level, where her work focused on the preparation and professional development of both individual teachers and trainers in the teaching profession. She has served as National Program Director for the Network of Sacred Heart Schools. In addition to her career in education, she was the Director of Camp Scully, a summer residential camp sponsored by the Diocese of Albany, where she served 400 inner-city, at-risk children ages 7-14. She has also served numerous committees, schools and organizations as a Trustee, Board or Committee member.
Dr. Dempf states that “St. Charles holds a very special place in the hearts and minds of Sacred Heart students, alumni and educators across North America.” She has spoken of the transformative experience of being at the Academy, walking the halls where St. Rose Philippine tread, and visiting the beautiful Shrine.
We look forward to Dr. Dempf’s installation as Head of School in a ceremony during the Mass of the Holy Spirit on Friday, Sept. 1, at 9:30 a.m. in Rauch Memorial Gym. All are welcome to attend.
