Join Alums for our Day of Service on Saturday, Nov. 16

For the past several years, alums have commemorated Philippine’s Feast (Nov. 18) with a Day of Service. Not only is this a community builder among alums, it is a direct expression of Goal 3 of Sacred Heart education: a social awareness which impels to action. Alums serve at area organizations as well as complete projects on the Academy’s campus.

This year, four options are available for our alums: Creating an Outdoor Classroom on Campus; Making Fleece Blankets; Assembling “Simple Gift” Bags and Preparing a Thanksgiving Meal at the Salvation Army. Help us spread the word and invite your ASH friends to join us for a Day of Service to honor Philippine!

We’ll begin at 8:30 a.m. with prayer in the Shrine, followed by coffee, juice and donuts in the Cafeteria. Projects will begin at 9:15 a.m.

Please submit the form at the bottom of this page to indicate your preference. Questions? Contact Diane Carroll Boerding ’76.

Create an Outdoor Classroom – Academy of the Sacred Heart
Help us prepare the covered area behind the nuns’ residence on campus as we envision an outdoor classroom space for Academy students. We’ll be doing some painting, weeding and general clean-up. Our hope is for this space to be used by students in the spring! Please note: if it is too cold to work outside, there will be other projects within the school.

Blanket Project – Academy of the Sacred Heart

No sewing skills needed to make fleece blankets for the Youth In Need organization and the children they serve. We are looking for people to assemble the blankets as well as donations of fleece blanket material. It requires two layers (coordinating but not matching prints) usually around 59″ (w) x 1-2/3 yds (Joanne’s Fabrics always has coupons available for large discounts, just check on-line). Fabric donations may be delivered to the Academy (attn. Lisa Tebbe) if you are unable to participate in the assembly. Please bring fabric, fabric scissors and pins.

Simple Gifts – Academy of the Sacred Heart
Sort personal care items and assemble bags for “Simple Gifts,” a project begun by Laurie Kirchoff Strickland ’76. We have collected many items from the Academy community, but feel free to bring toothpaste, body wash, shampoo and deodorant for teens and adults. These personal products will be donated to Youth in Need and Community Living to help individuals who have very little and need basic hygiene products.

Thanksgiving Dinner – Salvation Army Soup Kitchen, St. Charles

Academy alums will prepare and serve a full traditional, home-style Thanksgiving Dinner (turkey, stuffing, potatoes gravy, vegetable sides, pumpkin and apple pies, mulled cider) at the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen.  The Soup Kitchen does not have a special Thanksgiving Dinner, and does not serve ordinarily on weekends, so this will be a fun party for them and a special gift from Academy alums! (Academy alums volunteer at the Soup Kitchen the third Wednesday of the month).

We will begin in the morning with prep and cooking, will decorate the dining room with table cloths and table decorations, and will serve dinner around 3 p.m.  Volunteers are needed for all prep. cook, setup, serve on the line and waiting the tables as well as cleanup. This will be a full-day effort, so please indicate your availability on the form below:

  • 9:15-5 p.m.
  • 9:15-12:30
  • 12:30-5 p.m.

If you are unable to join us, you can still be a part of our Day of Service! If you would like to make casserole side dishes with provided recipes or pies to drop off in advance, please contact Diane Boerding. In addition, cash donations are appreciated to help with the purchase of turkeys and other ingredients. Checks may be made payable to Diane and mailed to her at: 10 Windermere Ct., St. Charles, MO 63301.
