Why the Academy?

The Academy of the Sacred Heart is an independent Catholic school in St. Charles, Missouri open to 3-year-old through 8th grade children of all faiths. Our program offers students the opportunity to learn and grow in a safe and happy environment, with a focus on building strong academic skills while fostering independent learning and communication. Curriculum highlights include: two Science labs, a Makerspace, 1:1 computing, French and Spanish, daily Physical Education, and recognized art, music and athletic programs.

Founded in 1818 by St. Philippine Duchesne, the Academy was the first of many Sacred Heart schools established in the United States. Our mission is to educate and inspire the heart and mind of each child to become a courageous and confident leader who knows and loves God, and who reveals that love by serving others. Our graduates are young men and women well prepared for the challenges of high school, college, and beyond.

Goal 3 of Sacred Heart Education

The Academy shares the five Goals of Sacred Heart education — the essence of our principles and values, with 24 Network of Sacred Heart Schools in the U.S. and Canada. Both timeless and timely, these Goals and their supporting criteria express what is at the heart of Sacred Heart education.

As we focus on Goal 3 — a social awareness which impels to action — we look at the accompanying Criteria that provide depth and inspiration for all members of our community.

This week, the Academy was pleased to host the Visiting Team from the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS). The group was comprised of six representatives from schools in our region, including the Chicago area, Indianapolis, and Cleveland.

Goal 2 of Sacred Heart Education

At the end of February students in Third through Eighth Class will take ownership of their learning by leading their own conferences. They reflect on their strengths, challenges, and growth. This builds responsibility and helps them see learning as theirs, not something done to them.

Miss Dwyer’s Third Class students loaded two vehicles with toys for Santa’s Helpers, Inc. “The spirit of giving is alive and well at the Academy,” said Barb Horkenbach, as she thanked students on behalf of the organization that serves the area’s under-resourced and seriously ill children and their families.

From the Heart

February 26, 2026

This week we hear from Eighth Class students who have been recently accepted to their high schools of choice. The decision of which high school to attend can be challenging, especially considering the number of superb secondary schools in the area. Students agree they feel the Academy prepared them well for high school and supported them through the admissions process.

Academically, ASH helped prepare me for high school. With small class sizes, teachers are able to focus on one student or a group of students. That helped me learn better and I was able to become an independent learner. When I am struggling, my teachers always take their time to explain it to me again or in a different way.

The process of selecting a school was hard, but the Academy and my family helped me. I have grown to be independent and confident in my own decisions. Going to open houses, touring, being able to ask questions and look for myself made me feel ready to pick a high school. The most important factors that I was looking for when choosing a high school were ones that aligned with the Academy. I wanted a school that felt like a family, just like the Academy. I love being at a small school and getting to know everybody in the halls.

I know how to communicate with people of all ages and this skill will help me in the future when I am looking for a college or a career. I chose Visitation Academy because it met all the criteria that I was looking for in a high school.
